Who is the Old Man

I am a man of strong faith, married to an amazing woman, and have 4 adult kids. I am a Navy veteran that spent over 26 years serving my country and traveling the world. I have always been a fan of movies, it was something me and mom shared as I was growing up. As I got older, that fandom only increased. After I got married, the majority of movie watching was done from HBO subscription, it was cheaper compared to movie tickets, popcorn and drinks, not to mention it was so much easier to watch from home when you had young kids. There used to be a new movie that premiered every Saturday night and we would all be sitting around the TV waiting for the premier. As all my children were born while I served and I was often deployed, Media was my outlet to take my mind off being away from family, whether it be in music or movies. I enjoy music but mostly I would entertain myself during downtime watching movies. Every time we pulled into a foreign port, I spent a lot of my money buying DVD multi-packs at vendor markets. Even when I got back home, my viewing of movies did not stop, I used to be an avid user of Video Rental locations, and then when Redbox came along, almost every time me and the wife went shopping we would pick out a DVD from all the new releases in the kiosk. Then in 1998, Netflix started as a mail order service, where you could get 3 DVDs shipped straight to your house and then you just shipped them back when you were done viewing them. That was a game changer; I was watching about 100 movies a year, and my trivia knowledge kept increasing.
I am in no way an influencer, journalist, or an expert in movie reviews. I am just one person that is trying to do something with their passion for cinema. I figure now it's time to share that knowledge in a way that can reach people everywhere. With the viewing of over 1,500 movies, I found myself always giving input while others were discussing movies. I spent years giving my opinions on cinema to family, friends, and colleagues. I want to take movie reviews to the next level and make it an interactive experience as the consumer seeks movie reviews by giving them the opportunity to create their own. Hopefully this consumer involvement will create social relationships between members as suggested in Stig Hjardvard’s definition of ‘media logic’. With members interacting with each other, it will hopefully create a sense of community, with members making their own reviews hopefully it will create a sense of ownership, who knows maybe they will even feel a part of the process. According to, “THE INFLUENCE OF EXPERT REVIEWS ON CONSUMER DEMAND FOR EXPERIENCE GOODS: A CASE STUDY OF MOVIE CRITICS.”, Reinstein, D. A., & Snyder, C. M. (2005), a positive review will influence a consumer to view a movie, but then the consumer will influence others to view the movie by word of mouth based on the positive review that influenced them, thus backhandedly giving a review to the reviewer
